A new artificial diet for the early weaning of seabass (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) larvae OMA
Devresse, B.; Candreva, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The weaning of marine fish larvae is a critical step in larval rearing. The successful transition from live food to an artificial feed depends among others on the quality of the dry feed used (e.g. freshness of ingredients, digestibility, quality of the formulation) and the larvae themselves (e.g. age, behaviour towards artificial diets, development of the digestive tract, efficiency of certain metabolic pathways). The present study shows the results obtained with a new artificial diet formulated for the weaning phase of marine fish larvae (<i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>) in commercial hatcheries.

Mensi, F.; Azaza, M.S.; Abdelmouleh, A.; Kraiem, M.M..

Bertelo, M.I.; Giberto, D.A.; Schiariti, A.; Bianca, F.; Suárez, J.; Mianzan, H.W..
The first results in the development of a standardized methodology to estimate Mnemiopsis leidyi intake rates and their impact on fish recruitment are presented. M. leidyi capability to consume lyophilized fish eggs and level of consumption of such type of preys, Artemia nauplii and rotifera were assessed. Although M. leidyi can consume lyophilized fish eggs, intake rates were extremely low, often null and in all cases lower than those estimated for the other types of preys offered. The increase of feeding rate on each prey was proportional to ctenophores size growth. The results observed suggest that consumption of fish eggs would not affect recruitment. However, there is not a uniform methodology in the literature that allows for standardized...

Bac, N; Biagianti, S; Brusle, J.
In the three species Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus , and Anguilla anguilla an artificial feeding (dry pellets) disturbs liver cells as revealed at ultrastructural level. In hepatocytes, anomalies consist of lipids storage (liposomes) considered as deviation in fatty acids metabolism. Moreover are observed cellular alterations (mitochondrial vacuolization, nuclear pycnosis) related to degenerative process. It is of great interest to understand wether liver modifications are just a reaction to an unbalanced feeding or a true trophic pathology.

ArchiMer
Le Borgne, Y; Diss-mengus, B; Marin, J.
Introduction: Among the problems found in mollusc hatcheries, the feeding of growing post larvae is of primary concern. It is therefore essential to reach algal production rationalisation through precise knowledge of the nutritional requirements of the different species of spat produced, and this for a diversity of size classes. Many authors, such as HARTMAN and EPIFANIO (1973), PRUDER and al. (1976), have attempted to establish appropriate food rations in laboratory for various post larvae mollusks according to their average weight. However, it is difficult to adapt those results to hatchery experiments, since raising conditions and yield issues are totally different. The purpose of this work is to determine nutritional rations required for different post...

Foraging behavior of the small-sized stingless bee Plebeia aff. flavocincta Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Jameson Guedes da; Meneses,Hiara Marques; Freitas,Breno Magalhães.
ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to investigate the flight range and foraging behavior of the stingless bee Plebeia aff. flavocincta, as well as testing its attraction to different sugar syrup concentrations within different distances to the colony. Foraging pattern along the day, preference of bees for sugar concentration in nectar and their relationship with distance from the colony were assessed by the means of manipulating those parameters with artificial flowers containing different sugar syrup concentrations and displayed at varying distances. The bees P. aff. flavocincta foraged from 6 a. m. to 5:30 p. m., with a foraging peak from 9 a. m. to 11:30 a. m. and showed preference for higher syrup concentrations (60% and 70%) though have foraged...

Grow-out mariculture techniques in tropical waters: A case study of problems and solutions in Hong Kong. ArchiMer
Wu, R; Lee, J.
Raft culture is practised and trash fish is being used as feed in Hong Kong. Culture space is limited and most of the culture sites are over-crowded. Food conversion ratio is poor (about 10-15), grow-out mortality is high (30-50%) and fish kills caused by oxygen depletions, algal blooms and red tides occur frequently. Disease and water pollution are also problems.

Growth response of penaeid postlarvae to dry diets containing <i>Artemia</i> biomass meal OMA
Abelin, P.; Tackaert, W.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of a feeding experiment conducted with post-larvae of <i>Penaeus monodon</i> and <i>P. vannamei</i> using formulated dry feeds in which <i>Artemia</i> biomass was incorporated. The total and partial substitution for Artemia nauplii were evaluated. Survival rates in the experiment were not very high, indicating that nutritionally balance dry diets do not support the same growth as Artemia nauplii, which must contain a particular ingredient yet to be identified

Campillo, Albert; Luquet, P..
The quantitiative requirements for protein have been determined in P. serratus reared from the post-larval stage to the 4th month. It appears that the apparent optimum percentage of protein in the diet is a minimum of 60%. At the 8th month, the mean wt of prawn reared with the best artificial diet (diet IV) is only 49% of the wt of shrimp reared with the digestive gland of Patella as a diet. The prawns reared to 4th month on a low-protein diet then reared on a natural diet until the 8th month, show important compensatory growth. However, the prawns do not achieve the wt of the control population, their average wt representing only 16% of the controls.

Guillaume, Julien.
Shrimp and prawn aquaculture is developing fast and amounts presently to 8% of world consumption. It concerns mainly various species of penaeids and is done with different techniques where feeding plays a variable role. This role is discussed both in the case of more or less extensive farming and in the case of intensive farming. The lack of knowledge in the field of nutrition itself is emphasized as well as the importance of feed technology both for juvenile foods and larval microcapsules or microparticles.

New developments in the mass culture and nutritional enrichment of the rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> using artificial diets OMA
Komis, A.; Naessens, E.; Van Ballaer, E.; Van Sprang, P.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
A research program was carried out to improve and facilitate rotifer (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) culturing as well as to assure their optimal nutritional quality as a prey, concentrating on the development of a dry and complete rotifer diet that does not require the use of algae and does result in a HUFA rich <i>Brachionus</i>. The present poster provides results dealing with culture aspects and rotifer nutritional quality. Different diet compositions based on single cell proteins enriched with various nutritional additives were evaluated. Results obtained so far demonstrate that a selected formula of a combined culture and enrichment diet, that does not involve the use of microalgae at all, can be successfully used for growing...

Perception of local inhabitants regarding the socioeconomic impact of tourism focused on provisioning wild dolphins in Novo Airão, Central Amazon, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALVES,LUIZ C.P.S.; ZAPPES,CAMILAH A.; OLIVEIRA,RAFAEL G.; ANDRIOLO,ARTUR; AZEVEDO,ALEXANDRE DE F..
Botos (Inia geoffrensis) are currently provisioned for use in tourist attractions in five sites in the Brazilian Amazon. Despite the known negative effects associated with human-wild dolphin interactions, this activity has been regulated and licensed in the Anavilhanas National Park in Novo Airão, Amazonas State, Brazil. We present an updated evaluation of the perception of the local community concerning the possible socioeconomic impacts of this tourism in Novo Airão. In April 2011, 45 interviews were conducted with inhabitants. A small segment of Novo Airão perceives currently itself as being economically dependent on the botos feeding tourism. Despite that, the economic benefits of this controversial activity apparently are not shared among most...

Preliminary results on the nutritional evaluation of omega-3-HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii for larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i> OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Amat, F.; Hontoria, F.; Léger, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Freshly hatched San Pablo Bay and Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-poor) and enriched meta-nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-enriched)were compared to reference <i>Artemia</i> nauplii (omega-3-HUFA-rich) as a food source for the larvae of the sea bass, <i>Dicentrarchus labrax</i>. Significant differences in survival and biomass production between the treatments could be attributed to the omega-3-HUFA content of the food. A delayed mortality in fish larvae fed the Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> is suspected to be caused by a high level of alpha-BHC in this <i>Artemia</i> source. Growth was not significantly different between the treatments, most probably due to the large variation in growth...

Promising results in the seed culturing of the Manila clam <i>Tapes semidecussata</i> with a manipulated yeast product as a partial substitute for algae OMA
Albentosa, M.; Naessens, E.; Léger, P.; Coutteau, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The results are presented of preliminary trials conducted with <i>Tapes semiducussata</i> spat using manipulated yeast products as substitutes for unicellular algae in their diets. Findings showed that spat growth increased with increasing amounts of algae in the artificial diet; growth was very poor when no algae were offered at all. It is concluded that manipulated yeasts may replace a substantial part of the algae in clam diets, but complete replacement is not possible, yet.
